Giving Tuesday

What started with a simple hashtag #GivingTuesday in the USA in 2012 as a free & open initiative to encourage people to do and has now grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate.

2012: New York

It started as an experiment. After the lavish celebrations of consumption of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, could social media be used to promote a different kind of behavior? Giving.

The answer was a more resounding ‘yes’ than anyone imagined and #GivingTuesday was born.

The growth in its popularity over the following decade was stratospheric: rising to over USD3B donated in the US alone on GivingTuesday 2023.

2025: Everywhere

Above the noise of the viral tweets and memes, a movement formed around an even bigger idea: that radical generosity – in all forms, all year round – could change the world.

Organic and decentralized, the GivingTuesday movement consists of 105 countries, with 1000s of generosity leaders around the world.

The Organization encourages philanthropy in all its forms: funds, time, advocacy, and acts of kindness, and it strives to reimagine a world built upon shared humanity and generosity. The Organization is composed of multiple layers of interconnected communities and networks, each growing, activating, and expanding networks of their own in their own unique ways. The Organization provides tools, capacity facilitation, and resources year-round to support those communities and networks in service of the shared purpose of building a world where generosity is part of everyday life.

Giving Tuesday

The movement wants to mobilize the population and make the initiative, officially present in 105 countries, grow even more and encourage donation as a habit. Giving Tuesday Lebanon exists so that we have a more generous and supportive country, strengthening the habit of giving as part of people’s daily lives.
As the Middle East’s largest NGO information repository, arab.org with its founding collaborators & partners celebrated the official launch of the first Giving Tuesday in the Arab World in 2020. See Global’s welcoming post for Lebanon πŸ‡±πŸ‡§ here.

Captains of industry and high achievers can champion their favourite causes and garner support for their charities through their personal and professional networks, engaging employees, clients, associates in coming together to celebrate their generosity in their community & beyond. Often it just requires embedding an ask in billing or communication to customers, employees or adding or turning on a charity feature to the check-out process in your e-commerce portal or payroll! Some corporates encourage their employees to donate a day’s pay or donate earned leave, for a chosen cause, with a matching contribution from the organisation. The process of coming together to choose a cause or a set of charities is highly engaging and gives impetus to employee volunteering and CSR!
